Units shipped in the quarter reached 19.8 million, a 43% increase compared to the same period last year, and approximately double the market growth rate. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,913 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 42%. Income before taxes was Euro 433 million representing a year-on-year increase of 187%. Net income was Euro 298 million. Sony Ericsson captured market share during the quarter due to the success of hit products such as the K800 Cyber-shot™ phone and Walkman® phone line-up. The company further strengthened its music offering at the end of the quarter with the shipment of a new high-end Walkman® phone, the W850, a tri-band/UMTS slider phone with storage capacity for up to 1,000 songs. Sony Ericsson also enhanced its music proposition by upgrading its PlayNow™ service to include full track, over-the-air downloads to high-end Walkman® models such as the new W850 and by launching M-BUZZ, a fixed and mobile internet space to promote new artists and their music. “The third quarter saw Sony Ericsson reap the success of hit products announced earlier in the year such as the high-end K800 and W810, mid-range K610 and lower-priced W300 and K310. Our strategy of using flagship products to give Sony Ericsson a lead position within a product category such as imaging with the Cyber-shot™ megapixel camera phone or music with the Walkman® line-up is creating a halo effect over lower-end models in the same category and encouraging new users to try our phones,” explains Miles Flint, President of Sony Ericsson. “We enjoyed a record quarter due to a favourable product mix, and after celebrating Sony Ericsson’s 5th Anniversary on October 1st the financial results we’ve announced today further illustrate how far the company has come in a short time. We have introduced a fresh approach to the communication of our brand, which aims to make it stand out in the marketplace, and we are confident that this will strengthen the Sony Ericsson brand further going forward,” he added.Average Selling Price (ASP) rose sequentially, due to a greater proportion of mid and high priced models in the product mix and the success of the K800 Cyber-shot™ phone during the quarter.Sony Ericsson continues to forecast the 2006 global handset market as being above 950 million units. On this basis the company believes it has outperformed the growth rate in the market and gained over 1% point market share this quarter, to reach a global market share of approximately 8%. In the third quarter Sony Ericsson added to its tennis sponsorship properties to become the title Sponsor of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami, renaming it the Sony Ericsson Open, and became a sponsor at the Tennis Master’s Cup in Shanghai, the company’s first involvement with men’s tennis. Sony Ericsson will now have a presence at three major tennis tournaments throughout the year covering Europe, North and Latin America, Asia Pacific and China.
‘Simple sophistication’ sums up the Sony Ericsson T250, announced today. The stylish metal finish of this compact phone gives it a premium feel that up until now has been the preserve of high end models. Add to this a feature set that makes it easy to stay connected, either with friends or the latest news, and you have the perfect partner for keeping in-touch with style.“Now you can have quality design and finish in a phone without the high-end price tag,” says Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “We realise that some people want just a straightforward phone, but we don’t feel that this should equate to straightforward design. Although technically the new T250 focuses on doing just the basics well, its advanced design clearly resembles the more premium T650.” Of course, the T250 is not only about style. For easy communication the T250 has a speakerphone that lets you share your call with others in the room, predictive text input for fast text and picture messaging, and an in-phone calendar that comes in handy for noting key dates or appointments. Based on consumer feedback, an built-in FM Radio is included on the T250 for music and news around the clock. The T250 kit includes a stereo handsfree headset. To complete the picture, an on-board camera allows you to capture your favourite moments, share them with your friends, or save them in the phone’s memory as a pocket photo album. With a colour choice of Black or Silver, it’s difficult to determine which is the more elegant. Whichever you choose, though, be sure that the T250 will get you noticed. The Sony Ericsson T250 will be available in two versions (GSM/GPRS 900/1800 and GSM/GPRS 850/1900) and will ship in selected markets from Q3 2007.

Sony Ericsson, the manufacturer that pioneered the development of smartphones, today unveils the P1 as the latest addition to its P-series range.“In one sense the Sony Ericsson P1 is an evolution of our P-series smartphones, as it pushes forward the best attributes of its predecessors,” says Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “At the same time there are also significant improvements in design, speed and battery performance.”
Building on the feature set of earlier models, the Sony Ericsson P1 supports a wide range of push email solutions and Web browsing applications, plus connectivity via hi-speed UMTS and Wireless LAN (WiFi™). Add to this its compact size and multimedia capabilities and the P1 is the complete mobile office. It is based on the Symbian™ operating system (v9.1) and UIQ 3.0, an open platform that offers broad potential for multimedia applications from operators/carriers, content owners and third party developers.
In short, the P1 is a device as small as a standard phone that offers flexible ways to work:
- Dual function keyboard - full alpha-numeric (e.g. QWERTY) text input combined with one hand phone usability
- Choice of text input method including handwriting and word completion
- Push email enabled including support for Exchange ActiveSync™ and BlackBerry® Connect™
- Integrated WLAN and VoIP enabled
- 3.2 megapixel camera with business card scanner
- Large 2.6” touchscreen with a Transflective Display that is easier to view in bright light conditions
Push email and remote working
Always being connected while on the move is now a normal part of working life. The Sony Ericsson P1 gives you the ability to handle your corporate or personal emails, contacts and calendar wherever you are. It offers support for a broad range of push email services including Exchange ActiveSync™ and BlackBerry Connect and allows for remote wiping of email and PIM data; something critical in the event of the phone being stolen or misplaced. The Sony Ericsson P1 lets you read and edit documents on the move, whether Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel. It also ships with a desk stand and USB cable in-box, making it straightforward to synchronise with your PC.
High speed connectivity
Both UMTS and integrated WLAN provide for high-speed Web browsing and data downloads, plus email at a rate and performance you enjoy from your office desktop. The Sony Ericsson P1 is also VoIP enabled for making calls over the internet.
Striking visuals
Surfing the Web is intuitive thanks to the Opera™ Web Browser that displays pages in horizontal, wide screen aspect. The large, touchscreen QVGA display can be seen and used even in bright environments due to the Transflective Display. The 3.2 megapixel camera takes great shots to store or share via Picture Blogging and is also a useful tool for work purposes. Quality downtime
As well as a business tool, the Sony Ericsson P1 also serves as an advanced multimedia companion. Its music and video player mean that you can take your favourite tunes and video clips with you on the 512MB Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) provided. Sony Ericsson makes listening to music and taking calls a quality experience with the launch of the Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-DS980, announced today. This stylish accessory delivers wireless music and calls with superior sound performance, even in noisy environments. This is achieved through advances in design, ergonomics and audio:
- Digital noise cancellation/echo reduction to reduce background noise
- Bluetooth™ 2.0 to deliver better quality voice calls
- A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) for high quality sound when listening to music
- A hidden OLED display delivers a seamless design effect, much brighter than a conventional LCD display.
“As more and more people choose to store their digital music on their mobile phone, it becomes increasingly practical to use a Bluetooth™ stereo headset that can deliver quality audio,” explains Jacob Sten, Head of Accessories Business Unit at Sony Ericsson. “This latest headset manages to do this within a compact, stylish design that you will want to be seen wearing. It is so convenient that your phone need never leave your pocket.” Given a talk time or music playback time of up to 6 hours, the HBH-DS980 has to be designed with comfort in mind. The soft silicon ear buds on the stereo headset are provided in three sizes, so as to ensure an optimum fit with the size and shape of the wearer’s ear. Separate to the headset, the overall unit weighs in at just 27 grams, so won’t be a burden when worn around the neck. Of course, if you are wearing your headset for long periods, you will also want it to look the part. Finished in a stylish charcoal colour, the Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-DS980 features a hidden ‘magic mirror’ display that only becomes visible once the headset is activated. Use it to view the title of the song playing on your phone, the battery status of your headset or the details of the caller trying to reach you. You can use the HBH-DS980 with more than one device at the same time. The new multipoint function allows you to listen to music stored on a Bluetooth™ enabled PC/laptop and handle calls from your phone at the same time. The Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-DS980 is designed with the wearer in mind. As well as maximizing comfort and flexibility, its subtle design makes it the ideal companion for a phone such as the new Sony Ericsson T650, also announced today. The HBH-DS980 will be available worldwide from Q3 2007.

The new MSA umbrella standard (JSR-248) aims to reduce fragmentation for the Java community in two ways. Firstly, MSA defines a clear set of component Java Specification Requests (JSR’s) that must be supported (mandatory JSR’s) on next-generation mobile phones. Secondly, MSA gives less room for interpretation in the implementation of the JSR’s by clarifying the conditions for interaction between them and for optional JSR’s. The new mandatory application programming interfaces (API’s) supported through MSA include 3D graphics, personal information management, Bluetooth™, Scalable Vector Graphics, web services, location services and payment services for Java ME (Micro Edition). Sony Ericsson has supported several of these API’s in its earlier Java Platform versions but with MSA there is finally industry alignment and a clear set of expectations on the implementation of these JSR’s. With MSA, the mass-market mobile phone becomes an increasingly capable platform for enterprise development and it will be possible to ensure secure data storage and communication and create new innovative applications, for example SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) maps. “With the introduction of MSA, the next-generation Java standard, in our portfolio we hope to continue our proud tradition of delivering consistency, quality and market-leading performance across our range of Java technology enabled phones – for the benefit of our operator customers, third party Java developers and consumers alike,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, SVP and Head of Portfolio & Platform Planning at Sony Ericsson. MSA reduces variations in the platform environment and creates a predictable environment for application developers, reducing porting issues when creating new applications and games for mass-market feature-rich phones. New for Sony Ericsson Java Platform 8 for mass-market feature phones are the following API’s:
MSA umbrella standard JSR-248 :
- Security & Trust Services API (JSR-177)
- Location API (JSR-179)
- SIP API for Java ME (JSR-180)
- Mobile 3D Graphics API (JSR-184) updated to version 1.1 from previous
- Java Platform versions
- Content Handler API (JSR-211)
- Scalable 2D Vector Graphics API for Java ME (JSR-226)
- Payment API (JSR-229)
- Mobile Internationalization API (JSR-238)
Sony Ericsson additions; not mandated in MSA :
- Java Binding for the OpenGL® ES API (JSR-239)
- Mobile Sensor API (JSR 256) for accelerometer applications

With the W580 Walkman® phone you can even take your favourite tracks to the track. It will count your steps, your calories and monitor your running speed/distance/time. Add to that your best tunes for motivation and whether you’re on a run, in the gym or just out for a stroll, the W580 is the perfect fitness partner.Urban cool really does meet mobile entertainment with the W580. Two sets of cool, optional speakers – the Portable Speakers MPS-70 and Snap-on Speakers MPS-75 – instantly transform the W580 into the heart and soul of any party. If you want to turn up the volume still further, then the Bluetooth™ Music Receiver MBR-100 lets you play your phone music directly through a home stereo, using your W580 as the remote control to skip through tracks and adjust the volume. So the W580 Walkman® phone looks and sounds stylish, whether you are at a party or just hitting the street.
